Leadership

This year, as the Design Editor, I have stepped-up as a leader in our newspaper class. Although school is virtual, I have still been able to mentor new designers and collaborate with my team in Zoom breakout rooms. I have also taught mini Design lessons to the class by creating slideshows and presenting them through Zoom. My leadership extends beyond the Huron Emery as the Co-President of Huron Green Team and gymnastics coach at the YMCA. I have been able to transfer the leadership skills I gained from these experiences into the newspaper classroom.

Duties of the Design Editor

  • Check that all pages follow the Huron Emery's design standards

  • Check that all pages follow Design Rules

  • Check that all pages are aesthetic

  • Give feedback to designers

  • Help designers brainstorm ideas for graphics and page layout

This is an example of feedback I gave to guest designer Bridget Jung:

Can we fit this text in with the other four columns? I think it looks a little awkward here.

Shift the pull-quote slightly to the left or right so that it's in-between two columns. That way, it breaks up the text better.

Wow! Amazing graphic. I think this graphic would look even better if it extended all the way to the edge of the page

I love the font and pop of color in the headline! Try to keep all body text and graphics out of this row.

This was Bridget's final page after my edits:
