Web and Social Media

My journalist journey beyond print.

PHOTO STORY | Huron's men's varsity tennis hosts senior night vs. Okemos

A photo can be worth a thousand words, and so sometimes, the best way to tell a story is through a photo slideshow. On Oct. 6, 2020, I photographed Huron's Men's Tennis team at their senior night and decided this was one of those times. I had never taken action shots before, so it was a fun learning experience. I also wasn't allowed on the tennis courts, so I improvised by positioning my camera through the cracks of the gate. Overall, it was a beautiful day and I think the photos turned out nice. Click images to enlarge.

MULTIMEDIA | Black Lives Matter protest in downtown Ann Arbor

After attending a Black Lives Matter protest on May 30, 2020, I wanted to create a multimedia post with the content I collected. I used Adobe Spark to incorporate many photos and quotes to create an interactive storytelling experience for readers. Click the arrow icon in the top right corner to open with Adobe Spark..

SOCIAL MEDIA | Governor updates guidelines for winter contact sports

Social media plays a huge role in news coverage. Now more than ever with social media's increasing popularity amongst the younger generation. We, the editorial staff of the Huron Emery, utilize Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to expand our storytelling beyond our newspaper and website. We are also working to increase the Huron Emery's presence on Snapchat and TikTok. When there is breaking news, social media is especially useful because we are able to quickly communicate bits of information to the public. Here is an example of an Instagram post I created on Feb. 4, 2020. News editor Lydia Hargett wrote an accompanying news article. We linked the article in our Instagram bio so that readers can easily access it if they are interested in learning more. Click on image to open with Instagram.

One way the Huron Emery celebrated Black History Month in 2021 was through our Instagram page. We commemorated Black authors, local Black-owned businesses and more. Here is one of the posts I created to honor Black Huron alumni. Click on image to open with Instagram.
